Open source relies heavily on engineering-driven process; fast feedback loops, terminal tools, and Git workflows. But in order for open source to thrive, we need to include open design. To truly succeed and scale, we must build experiences that are as empowering to use as they are to code.
In this talk, we will explore how to dismantle the ‘us vs them’ mentality between engineers and designers and successfully navigate engineering-focused environments. Drawing on insights from my FOSS Backstage 2026 panel (featuring design and engineering leaders from Canonical, GitHub, and Home Assistant), I will share practical strategies for blending UX seamlessly into developer workflows.
Attendees will walk away with actionable takeaways on dismantling engineering and design silos, sharing work cycles, and proving value of
Whether you are a designer trying to make an impact in a developer-heavy project or an engineer looking to build more accessible and approachable tools, this talk will equip you with the collaborative mindset needed to succeed. Open source is as much about software as it is about being in community with each other. Join to learn how to lower the drawbridge between our disciplines and build better software together!
